There is something about self-sustainable equipment like the Crush Light. It's actually something I thought I do not need but it actually gave us light on occasions where we can't use our headlamp and heck all you need is the sun to charge it.

We hooked it up on our backpacks wherever we went and it was always a conversation starter, a lot of other travellers/adventurers even the villagers were thoroughly impressed with the Crush Light. Some of them even offered us money to buy it off us. Haha! In rural areas where at times a wall socket or electricity is limited, this is such an awesome invention! So kudos GoalZero!

LAYING IT OUT & BREAKDOWN :

  • Cost ( SGD$) subject to variability - Crush Light - 31 Crush Light Chroma - 39

  • Weight - Weight: 3.2oz (91g)

  • ^Ease of use - 5/5 It is relatively straight forward, there's a small button that let's you switch on and off. However if you purchase the CHROMA (which lights up in six different colour modes), you have to double-press the button twice for the colour mode functions. And if it the power dies off, it can be powered from the sun via its built-in solar panel or plug it to GOALZERO's solar panel to charge when the sun is out. The other option is to attach it to a power bank using the USB port via micro USB cable which is included.

  • ^Sturdiness/Ruggedness - 4/5 In almost everything I purchase I prefer for them to be waterproof and apparently the Light Crush is waterproof IPX4 rated. So you do not have to worry when you're out and about when it's a rainy day.

  • ^Ease of cleaning - 4/5 You just have to be careful with the USB port other than that everything else is waterproof IPX4 rated

  • ^Aesthetics - 4/5

^ On a scale of 1-5 (1 being poor, 5 being excellent)

PROS :

  • it's light, collapsable and flat which makes it easy to pack

  • easy to clean

  • possible to hang it on backpack while on the move

  • It can be moulded in a way you can make it face where the sun is to charge it.

CONS :

  • there is no indicator to tell us whether it's fully charged so we've got to estimate most of the time which was a bugger.

Who is it for?

Anyone and everyone. I have used it for our off-grid adventures and I have used it at home where I am doing some light reading, etc. Again the idea to go Waste-less which also means even where electricity is accessible and you have the choice or option to not plug in - I use the Crush Light.

Love it?

Heck yeah! I thought that the Crush Light will be something that I'd use only when I'm outdoors or off-grid but the functions of it being a side-lamp or reading light (especially the mouldable function it has besides being only able to hang it up, etc) is a plus to me. Again all you need is the sun to charge it if you're going on a Waste-less journey or plug it to a wall socket. Only downside is that you do not really know when it's fully charged or when it's going to run low.
